Building the Environment Profession in Australia & New Zealand
December 2010 Newsletter
Volume 6

What a year 2010 has turned out to be! In its sixth year, the CEnvP Scheme has continued to grow steadily. There are now 321 CEnvPs across Australia, New Zealand and even the UK and Seychelles.

We are now looking forward to the first applications for Ecology and Impact Assessment Specialist Certification which was announced at the EIANZ Annual Conference in late October. I have already started to complete my application form! See below for details.

Congratulations to fellow CEnvPs - John Stanisic, Ian Spellerberg, Judith Roper Lindsay, Anita Mitchell and Amy Clore for their Environmental Awards given at the EIANZ Annual Gala Dinner in late October.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who assisted the CEnvP Scheme this year, including the Certification Board and the CEnvP Assessment Panels - thank you for your support, which the Scheme could not do without. We need to acknowledge the efforts of Wendy Stegman, Diana Turner and Lauren Sinreich, who took over from Melissa Grant earlier in the year. Many of you have already had contact with our new Program Manager, Peta Haasbroek who has already made a noticeable impact on our administrative systems, and our website. We know she'll continue to be a huge asset to the team.

We eagerly wait to see what 2011 will bring, as we turn our attention to the new STEP Program (Staged Training for Environmental Practitioners) being developed by EIANZ. We will post details on our website as soon as possible. On behalf of the CEnvP Scheme, we wish you all the best for the festive season, and a happy and successful New Year.

Yours sincerely,

Nigel Murphy, CEnvP

CEnvP Profile

Colin Tickell is an environmental engineer with significant experience in environmental management in Australia, the United Kingdom and India. His experience and skills are in areas of the environmental approvals process and documentation for major resource and industrial projects, including EIS preparation and training others in these areas. This includes provision of strategies for environmental aspects of resource development projects at the feasibility and design stage. Environmental due diligence studies are also a part of this work. He currently works for Hatch Associates, based in Chatswood, NSW.

He has specialist skills in acoustics and represents industry on Standards Australia technical committees for environmental and occupational noise. He is currently Chair of the Environmental Noise Standards Committee.

Colin originally trained in Applied Physics at RMIT and has qualifications in environmental management and environmental law from Macquarie University and the University of Sydney. Following graduation, he spent a couple of years with British Aerospace in the UK working in high intensity noise testing. In 1981 he returned to Australia with BHP Engineering and was involved in many mining and resource development projects undertaken by BHP.

He is currently responsible for management of the environmental noise monitoring and assessment service Hatch provides to BlueScope Steel (Port Kembla), a 5 million tonne per annum integrated steel plant. Other major areas of work include heavy haul freight rail noise and vibration in Australia and South Africa, wind farm noise assessment and mine ventilation fan noise.

Colin sought to become a CEnvP because he considers it helps indicate a higher level of expertise, objectivity and integrity that both industry and the public can rely on for advice. It also provides an expectation that practitioners will remain up-to-date in their field.
