of the Year, Adam Smith.

Dr Adam Smith is the winner of the 2008 Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP) of the Year. His award was conferred by the Honorable Peter Garrett, MP at the annual Gala Dinner of the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ) on 31 October.

Adam is the Manager of Environmental Impact Management for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. He is regarded as an expert on marine ecology, environmental impact assessment, communication, policy and management, holding a Bachelors degree, PhD and MBA.

Adam has been instrumental in successfully establishing a partnership arrangement with a number of stakeholders to ensure that all uses of the Park are ecologically sustainable. He has also made a contribution to the environmental knowledgebase on environmental management in the marine environment through his extensive number of publications.

Adam has been a champion of the certification program, recognizing the importance of having his staff become certified environmental practitioners. In accepting his award, Dr Smith called upon Government departments and agencies throughout Australia to “support the certification initiative, as this will lead to improved environmental practice and outcomes in Australia and New Zealand”.

CEnvP Chair, Nigel Murphy, congratulated Dr Smith on his achievement in helping to protect one of Australia’s great natural wonders and identified the importance of good practice as well as good policy if we are going to achieve successful environmental outcomes for these priceless places.

Established in 2004, the CEnvP program provides a higher level of assurance to the community, employers, clients and professional associates by certifying practitioners that meet high standards of professional and ethical conduct.
