GEELONG SCIENTIST NAMED ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTITIONER OF 2011

Environmental and sustainability consultant Simon Leverton has been named the “Environmental Practitioner of the Year” at the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand’s (EIANZ) Annual Conference Gala Dinner 2011 held on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast last week.

Nigel Murphy, Chair of the Certified Environmental Practitioner Scheme (CEnvP) Board said “Simon is an outstanding environmental practitioner who has worked for government and the private sector. His work currently assists private sector and government clients meet regulatory compliance, strive for best practice and implement resource efficiency and monitoring initiatives. Practitioners like Simon are the backbone of our profession.”

At the award ceremony Mr Leverton from EnviroRisk Management commented “I’m flattered, as well as humbled, to be recognised by my peers for my role in the field of developing and implementing environmental systems, and advancing professional and ethical environmental practice. The Award is something I never expected to receive, and I wish to thank all my business associates and work friends for their support.”

EnviroRisk Management Director Stephen Jenkins reported “Simon has been a pioneer of Environmental Management Systems in Australia, having worked on improving the environmental performance of organisations for over 20 years. He is a highly skilled operator, who is dedicated to obtaining a win-win outcome for both the environment and the business he’s working with.”

CEnvP was established in 2004 with the support of the Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts to advance ethical and competent environmental practice. There are currently over 370 CEnvPs across Australia and New Zealand. The EIANZ, a non-profit professional association formed in 1987, plays a key role in Australia and New Zealand as a major contributor in the development of effective and responsible policies in environmental management.

Previous CEnvP of the Year award winners have included John Stanisic of Biodiversity Assessment & Management (2010) and Mark O’Brien of Beyond Neutral (2009).
